According to archaeologist father "Paghatti" the Franciscan, landmarks of the Crusader and Byzantine churches were discovered as Franciscans embarked upon expanding the church in the year of 1955, in addition to uncovering some of the remnants of the Synagogue Church going back to the second and third centuries.
The current Basilica of Annunciation was erected between the years of 1960 and 1969 with cement covered in sculpted stones, and its architect was an Italian named "Motzio".
The Church is two floors high; each floor comprising an independent church; the upper and the lower churches.
The upper church is decorated with mosaics of the Virgin Mary donated by communities from around the world and is topped with a 40-meters-high-dome with the shape of a lily.
The lower church is the Grotto of the Annunciation, where the announcement to Virgin Mary by Archangel Gabriel has occurred.
